Hugh was born on 21 July 1921 in Moville, Co Donegal, the second of five children. He was educated at St Columb’s College, Londonderry, where he obtained his Higher School Certificate. In 1938 he passed the Open Clerical Examination for entry into the UK Civil Service, and in 1939 he came to Redhill to take up his first position.
When Hugh was 18, he volunteered for service in the Royal Navy and underwent training at Gosport and Lee-on-Solent
Last Sunday
Attendance was 294. The Offertory had not been counted at the time of going to press, but full details will be published in next week’s Newsletter. Late donations to CAFOD mean that we are now able to send them a grand total of £563.13. Many thanks.
Sunday 25th March 200th Anniversary Of The Abolition Of Slavery
Today we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act. Lord Granville was the Prime Minister and William Wilberforce was the MP who tabled the motion. It was approved by the Lords by 100 votes to 34, and in the Commons by 283 votes to 16. King George III gave Royal Assent on 25th March 1807. England was the first country to pass a law to end the slave trade, thus ending one of the most brutal chapters in human history
